Evidence of Insanity, by Carol F. Piner, is a collection of sometimes humorous and sometimes tragic personal stories from her life. She was born to a couple completely unprepared and ill-equipped to rear a child. Piner’s stories will make you laugh and make you cry. Overall, you will experience a courageous straight-forward look at how one woman lived through a challenging upbringing and the achievements and failures she faced.

The evidence of Carol’s ability to look past her mother’s shortcomings and love her unconditionally is prevalent to the last page. “Put her down and I will take you down,” says Piner. Woven throughout the book is a thread of unconditional acceptance. Rather than blaming her mother, she has chosen instead to believe her mother did the best she could with her circumstances and/or her weaknesses.

As someone reared in Oklahoma, I found the small coastal hometown’s culture fascinating. Carol carried me to Carteret County, NC. Her life growing up was full of the twist and turns you would expect to see in a novel. While she emphatically states the brush strokes of editorial license and embellishments are present in the text, I sensed more fact than fiction.

Readers who are more passive in nature may be encouraged to be more assertive in life. On the other hand, the fast-paced strength of Carol Piner will solidify in those of similar nature the benefits of such an outlook on life. The resolve, courage, and strength of character Carol developed in spite of her circumstances are inspiring.

One of the powerful aspects of this book is its ability to appeal to the reader regardless of their educational background. While the entire book will be read by most without the need for support from Webster, Carol’s storytelling prowess is gripping and descriptive in a way that pulls the reader in from the beginning and holds your attention through the end.
