Funny Men’s Fashion Mistakes
With such a great range of fashion mishaps in the world of men’s clothes, where to start?
Unfortunately, the Don Drapers of this world are few and far between. They are easily out-numbered by the likes of Justin Bieber, whose unhealthy addiction to baseball caps really should be tempered. The relatively small number of fashion alternatives for men, would lead you to think that the chances for faux pas were reduced, however, this appears not to hold true.
In my book, the most serious of all male fashion mistakes is the old ‘socks and sandals’ scandal. There has never been, and never will be, an occasion where this look should be tried. With the stiletto, maxi-stiletto, platform shoe and so forth, women have truly suffered in the name and fashion, thus the plea of blisters or chaffing is not a justifiable excuse for men to pull on their socks with their sandals, Tevas or deck shoes. If it is all too much, then pair your shorts with converse sneakers and trainer socks, (socks that cannot be seen above the shoe).
For some reason, a large proportion of men seem to have issues with colour matching and how to wear complimentary shades. As a general rule of thumb, don’t try and mix black with navy, choose either one or the other. Most importantly avoid a ‘do-it-yourself’ suit. A suit is thus named because it consists of trousers AND jacket. The two garments are sold together because they match and to prevent you from looking like Jeremy Clarkson, or any member of the Top Gear team come to think of it. If you start trying to be too individualistic and purchase your jacket and trousers separately, then you run a very high risk of giving the impression that you got dressed in the dark. Just because two items are black, it doesn’t mean that they go together. Although you may laugh at your girlfriend when she insists an item is the ‘wrong’ white or black, it is verifiable that black comes in different shades and tones, and must accordingly be treated as separate colours. That said, this autumn is all about wearing mismatching shades of grey, demonstrating the fickle nature of the fashion industry.
As a final pointer, whatever the current trend, always remember to dress for your years and bare in mind whether you are a beanpole or more amply covered! The trend for skinny jeans in recent times has seen many men fall victim to dressing for a trend, rather than for themselves. Unless you are at art college, or play in some slightly grimy indie band, then you run the risk of looking like Russell Brand, or as though you are modelling a new departure in tights for men. A style that is also difficult to achieve is the sardonic geek. This involves wearing granny-knit sweaters, big glasses and so forth. Worn with panache, you will appear insouciant, get it wrong and you will seriously be taken for a nerd.
One item that definitely isn’t a fashion blunder is the mens leather bomber jacket
