Japan is at the forefront of technology, it’s progressive and innovative culture is a breeding ground for new fun and exciting ideas. Some might be considered a little quirky but that’s what makes Japan and especially Tokyo such a great travel destination. Here are five of the best:

Robots – The affection of a certain island nation for all things robotic, from hundred foot tall warfighting mecha to infantile therapy robots, is well known. To say that the Japanese are fervent about robots is a great understatement. Major corporations devote colossal resources to robot design. In the past six months alone, the Japanese consumer has been offered more than ten robotic products for entertainment or home use. Japan loves its robots and if you travel to Tokyo you’ll likely to see many of these fascinating machines.

Karaoke – Karaoke was born in Japan over 30 years ago. As singing is something that can be easily enjoyed by everyone, karaoke quickly gained popularity and is now a famous part of popular culture. There are more and more karaoke establishments that, in addition to allowing patrons to have fun singing, have expanded their services and now people can enjoy great food or soaking in a hot bath while singing!

Cosplay – Cosplay is a type of performance art in which participants don costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea. Characters are often drawn from popular fiction and many of the younger generation walk round in these colourful costumes which makes for an interesting sight!

Love Hotels – One aspect of Japanese culture that most people might not know about is the Love Hotel Tokyo trend. Love hotels are establishments that specifically cater to couples who are looking for some private and intimate time. These hotels rent their mostly unusually themed rooms by the hour to frisky young lovers who are otherwise starved of privacy and space in a crowded city.

Maid Cafes – Maid cafes and butler cafs where the service staff dress as cute maids, or as butlers. Such restaurants and cafs have quickly become a staple of Japanese culture. Compared with service at normal cafs, the service at cosplay cafs involves the creation of a pretty different atmosphere. The staff treat the customers as masters and mistresses in a private home rather than merely as caf customers. A fascinating part of Japanese life.
