Jack was a drunk and a joker and is said to have tricked the devil into climbing into a tree and then carving a cross on it preventing him from climbing down. Legend has it that he was neither allowed into heaven for his evil deeds nor into hell for tricking the devil so he was given a single ember after his passing to light his way through the cold and dark winters. Originally turnips were used but pumpkins were more plentiful in America.
