The Hazards Of Dishonorable Media
I stand at the local grocery checkout counter, and every time, rain or shine, I am confronted with a blast of speculation about the lives of celebrities. Today’s media finds it entirely appropriate to speculate on events and lives of others. Often, the speculation is later proven to be untrue! Folks fail to understand, though, that the speculation can affect others’ opinions on the celebrities. That’s not really honorable.
Why does sensationalism make people buy tabloids all about celebrity rumors? Why do people feel so good about reading it and later mention it to their friends? People seem to imply, “They aren’t that great after all, see?” when subsequently discussing it. Perhaps this is the cause for gossip selling so well. Somehow, the gossip rags seem to give people a strange way of feeling good about themselves. To be honest, the celebrities themselves play some role in engendering sensationalism. While railing at each other in the process, some stars will do anything to get this kind of attention. Particularly if they speak ill of others, they end up perpetuating the discourse by contributing to it.
If a famous person’s reputation is harmed by this media, what happens when he or she desires to stand up to it? That may turn out to be simpler said than done. There are challenges they face, including getting more attention to whatever the issue was to begin with. It is not uncommon in today’s society for people to libel others. Why does this happen, and can we do anything to end it?
Since the simple act of doing this can be so utterly damaging, we should enlighten people about the consequences. There are many associations that endeavor to bring about more compassion, which would ultimately do away with these behaviors and help people to be respectful.
