Resources for learning the art of magic are so abundant that it can be daunting to the beginning magic student. Myriad instructional guides, DVDs, books, and other material are widely available.

It is best to take things one step at a time and start out with a magic set. You want to buy the right one to get you off to a good start and this article will point you in the proper direction.

What kind of magic do you think you want to learn about? What about platform magic, stage magic, micro magic, or another kind? You might not even be sure, but if there is something in particular that catches you, see if you can find a set that will suite that interest. If you are not sure, then just get a general set.

It is up to you to choose the right set for yourself. One kind of set that is a great general starting point is the full set. The full set will give you several props to perform many different tricks and get you prepared for the first magic shows you will perform. All you have to do is follow the steps in the instructional guide provided.

Though these sets are quite easy to use, if you aspire to become skilled at more advanced magic, you might want to choose another starting point. The full set has props that are prepared gadgets and they do most of the work for you. There is a risk that you will become dependent on this rather than learning proper techniques that are the foundation of magical skill.

A magic book will teach you the basic skills that a good performer will need. The book will show you the classic teachings and start you out with strong fundamental techniques that will allow you to build up to more advanced levels.

The book is just words and diagrams and can be a little too abstract for the beginner. It will be an important learning tool, but you might need something more to make it all easier to understand.

It is a good idea to also look for a DVD or a DVD set for magic instruction. This will offer the student much of the same information as the book yet with visual aid for a clearer understanding of the methods and theatrics.
