Melbourne City in Florida is not to be confused with the place with the same name in Australia. It sits on the Indian River Lagoon and although not as famous as the Australian city it has plenty to offer visitors. It is well worth making the time to visit.
Towards the end of the 1800s some of the earliest settlers arrived in the area. They set up their homes and businesses alongside the already established town of Eau Gallie on the river. The river became the main source of income and transport for the two towns. The railroad took over the commercial transport in 1893 from the river affecting both towns.
The towns of Melbourne and Eau Gallie remained separate until 1969, when residents voted to make it one large city. They chose the former towns name as the name for their newly formed city. The two very different old town areas have been incorporated and are rich in history for visitors to the area.
There is an island strip that sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon. This strip of land holds a small part of the city. The island and mainland join together with two massive feats of engineering. The two four lane bridges that span over the the water are known as the Melbourne and Eau Gallie Causeways.

Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center is with an easy hours drive from Melbourne for those willing to travel a bit further. Towards the east is Disney World which is about an hour and a half drive from the city. The transport routes to and from this city make it an excellent base for anyone wishing to tour the area.
